Ok, September was a good book month for me! Honestly, I have no idea how I read so much this month while also trying to get our house ready to be packed up and moved! I think (ok I know HAH) I stayed up late reading way too many nights! I loved the series I read this month, would highly recommend checking it out!
I had a couple of friends who read “A Curse So Dark and Lonely” and really loved it, so I thought I would give it a chance too! It was a great “fallish” kind of read, I like to read things a little more mysterious or dark during the time of the year. This book had a “Beauty and the Beast” kind of basis to it, a girl is abducted from one world into another from a completely different time period. A world stuck in a perpetual Autumn season until the curse could be broken on the Prince, he needed to find his one true love. Of course, at the end of the season, the prince turns into a terrifying beast if he hasn’t broken the curse, and wreaks havoc on the towns surrounding the palace. Will Harper stay and help try to break the curse or will she return home to take care of her mother and brother…There were times the book was a little cheesy, but overall it was easy to read and at points I had trouble putting it down!
There aren’t many times when a sequel is better than the original, but at some points I felt like “A Heart So Fierce and Broken” was just that. Harper returns to Emberfall, and there is talk that Prince Rhen is not the true heir to the throne. Is Rhen’s right hand man, Grey, the true heir? Read and find out! 😉
“A Vow So Bold and Deadly” was the concluding book to the series, and I thought it all worked out so well! Sometimes you read a series and the end is just not great, and then you feel like you invested so much time for a let down hehe! Emberfall prepares to fight a north kingdom, Syhl Shallow, those who believe Rhen is the rightful heir against those who do not…it was all so well written that I flew through this book. I loved seeing how the story ended and also was selfishly happy that the book ended how I wanted it to!
I listened to the Lazy Genius Podcast a couple of times this year and enjoyed what she had to say, so when I saw the she had a whole book out over her simple and practical thoughts to life, I grabbed that from the library and listened to it. “The Lazy Genius Way” is a great read for just simplifying your life, prioritizing what matters from what doesn’t, and just doing things more efficiently. I’m all about saving time, so this was a good read for me this month!
I enjoyed reading “The Midnight Library” this month as well, it was another “afterlife” kind of story, but I much preferred this one over the one I read last month. The book opens with the character Nora spiraling down in her life, to the point at which she chooses to try and take her life. A little morbid, but while she is unconscious, she has I suppose an “experience” or dream that helps her see what life could be. She enters the midnight library, where she has the opportunity to read book after book of different scenarios that her life could take. Nora experiences the scenarios, and at each point, something isn’t quite right and she gets bounced back to the library to test out the next life. She finally figures out the point of life so to speak, desiring to live and regretting her mistake. Can she return to life as she would want it or will she miss her chance to live as the library crumbles around her?
“The Nantucket Inn” was a super easy read, very light hearted, very simple. I honestly wasn’t super impressed by the writing, there were times it was extremely predictable and just plain bad haha, but at this point in my life I needed easy. I think when I finished I was like eh, but then I went on to read her other books in the series and it grew on me a little. Lisa’s husband had passed away, leaving her with an incredible gambling debt that she had no knowledge of. She decides to turn her home into a bed and breakfast, taking a huge risk in order to be able to stay on Nantucket island. Her four children also live on the island, so the story is about all of them and their life issues so to speak hehe. Entertaining to say the least.
“The Hunting Party” was my least favorite this month, and because of the intense amount of language, not one I would recommend. A group of friends travel up to a cabin and get stuck there in a huge snow storm. Of course, someone is murdered, and the list of suspects is short. Normally I would like this kind of read, but the people just weren’t nice to each other in general, it really surprised me how they could all be friends treating each other as they did, and like I said earlier the language was awful. The story ended very abruptly too, which left me feeling like I wish I would have quit before I got invested in the storyline!
I loved this meme so much haha, there have been series I have read where I literally have to take days off from reading because I can’t move forward. I’m so invested in the characters and their lives that I can’t switch my brain over to a new set of people!
Hope you enjoyed the reads this month, check out the links below if you are interested in previous months this year! You can also check out my Books tab for reviews from past years, and follow me on Goodreads here!
What I’m Reading – August 2021
Maybe I should read “The Lazy, Genius Way!” Sounds like a good, practical book. I don’t know how you had time to read with all the new house activities going on!
Haha, I listened to that one! I honestly don’t know either except that it was kind of my escape from the crazy so I made time for it!
