Overall, pretty decent line up for this month. I liked everything for the most part, loved one series, and was fine with the rest hehe!
I had a lot of mixed feelings on “Take a Chance on Me,” …it was overall a good little book, but there were a LOT of characters, each with their own drama or story line, and ultimately, I just really didn’t like the way the book ended. It didn’t seem to jive with the point of the book. Bridget and Patrick are working on a compatibility project together for their job, and of course, Patrick has been in love with Bridget since he met her, only she is engaged to someone else. Then Bridget’s sister, Emma, agrees to be a part of the compatibility project, and get married to someone at first sight. I can’t say too much more without giving the book away, but some things work out, and some things don’t hehe! So maybe a book worth reading, but be prepared for a lot of ups and downs, a lot of people, and for it not to work out as you might expect!
“The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-banks” was an interesting read. I checked it out from my library based on a recommendation of a book account I follow, but it was not really what I thought it would be. She had said it was funny and had her laughing the whole way through, but I felt like it was a little more serious, as a girl is trying to prove herself amongst a secret society of boys at her private school. It was entertaining what she was able to get these boys to do anonymously, but some of it did feel a little too far. Decent story, but maybe not quite my cup of tea.
I enjoyed “Queen of Thieves,” it was intense at times, but I loved reading about the history post war of the rival gangs in London, it was something I didn’t know anything about. Because of the devastation of WW2 and the rationing of everything from food to clothing, people were basically forced to acquire what they needed from not so honest means. Alice Diamond is the leader of an all female gang, who excel at stealing whatever they can to then sell to others. It’s a cut throat group to be a part of, but she takes care of her girls. Nell finds herself in a difficult situation, being pregnant out of wedlock, and Alice scoops her up to become a part of their group. Nell becomes involved in a lot more than she bargains for, spying on their rival male counterpart gang, all the while looking out for herself and challenging Alice’s reign. It was a really good story, had a few scenes that were a bit much, but it was a good read. I loved looking up the group online and reading some of the real history about them too.
Ok. When I first started “Finlay Donovan is Killing It,” I was thinking, “What is this book haha…” The beginning is a little goofy/crazy/silly/unrealistic, but keep reading and it starts to get so much better, and makes sense to see where the author is taking the story. Finlay is a struggling single mother, just trying to get ends to meet, just trying to get everyone where they are supposed to be, as well as writing her story. She meets with her literary agent to talk about her suspense/murder mystery story she is working on, and a random lady overhears their conversation, thinking that she is talking about putting a hit on someone. She drops her phone number into her bag when Finlay isn’t looking, offering money to take out the lady’s husband. Finlay gets tangled up in a lot of miscommunication, her curiosity leading her into an actual murder investigation. It was one of my favorite books that I have read this year, had me literally laughing out loud at times. I was so excited to learn that this was a series, so of course I headed right into the next book!
“Finlay Donovon Knocks ’em Dead” was just as good as her first book. Finlay is still having a hard time handling her life as a single mom of two little ones, but now she does have Vero, her friend turned nanny helping her out. She’s struggling to write her follow up novel, when a hit is put out on her ex husband’s life. She’s trying to keep him alive and figure out who has a hit on him, plus her hot cop from the first book is back in her life, and of course she finds herself in the middle of an investigation again. It’s another good little read, really enjoyed this one too!
I have been reading this little Nantucket series for a while now by Pamela Kelley, and while it’s not up to Elin Hilderbrand or Nancy Thayer standards, it’s cute and sweet. “Nantucket Homes” is her eighth book, and I do feel like her books have gotten better as she has gone along. Kay has come onto the island to relax and travel a little since her husband passed away. She didn’t expect to make such good friends while she was there, so it was cute to see what she decided to do at the end. Victoria had moved back to the island in the last book I think, and then her old friend from high school, Travis, moves back as well after his wife and him split up, so you can imagine what might happen between the two of them. There’s ups and downs with everyone, Chase and Beth have some unwanted competition in the building scene, and Lisa is dealing with some copycat issues of her lobster quiche recipe hehe. Like I said, easy to read, cute and sweet.
