Another eclectic group of books this month, I finished the futurist series I was reading and also read a couple of “self help” kind of books, and one other one that was just cute. Hope you enjoy!
“The Dazzling Heights” was the second book in the Tower series I started last month…again, not a series I would just shout from the rooftops that everyone needs to read, but it was just interesting in a different sort of way and was so easy read. It did not take a lot of mental energy at all haha, and that’s what I have needed lately. Obviously being a second book in the series it was a continuation of the story line from the first book, the crime that bound these young people together and the progression of their relationships with each other. There were some new characters introduced as well, a mother and daughter con artist duo, so that was an interesting twist.
“The Towering Sky” was the final book of the series, and while reading the ending I wasn’t crazy about how it worked out, once she cleared up the final ending I didn’t mind it. There were some truths to take out of it, regarding being true to yourself and what is important in life, but nothing earth shattering hehe. I feel like I don’t have a lot to say about it other that again this was purely entertainment for me this month. I know, I’m not really compelling you to read this one, right? Haha…
I really liked “Eliza Starts a Rumor,” a woman bound to her house because of trauma induced agoraphobia, notices what seems like an affair brewing at her neighbors house. Out of sheer boredom, and from feeling motivated to increase the interest on the mommy facebook group she moderates, she makes a post about it. It gets SO much traffic, and one woman in particular notices odd behaviors of her husband and becomes paranoid that he is the cheater. There is a lot about friendship and romance in this book and how we support each other through hard times. This book had me in tears near the end as it also covers the trauma of rape and how that trauma can follow you your whole life. I enjoyed reading this one, it had me laughing at some points and just interested to see what would happen with all of the characters.
I listened to “Set Boundaries, Find Peace” this month, and I felt like there was a good amount to take away from this one. Of course, any self help kind of book will also have things that don’t apply to how you live your life, but there was a lot of practical information about relationship boundaries that I found really helpful. I think for me personally, books like this have been helpful because I am naturally a people pleaser and can easily get burnt out. It’s helpful to just contemplate when I need to take breaks or insert space into a relationship. I like listening to these kinds of books rather than reading them, I feel like it just sinks in a little better for some reason.
I really liked “Share Your Stuff, I’ll Go First” this month too. One thing I’ve really been working on the last few years is being a better listener, asking more questions and listening rather than inserting my opinions or advice into conversations. This book was all about questions to ask your friends or people you are close to in order to deepen relationships. It made me reflect a lot on who has influenced me in my life, what occasions or experiences seemed to be the most meaningful or impactful to me and so on. A really thought provoking book and also funny and moving, because of course she shares first with the questions she asks.
Last for May was “The Thursday Murder Club,” which was a funny little read. I told you, I’ve really been into British murder mysterious this year, so here’s another one for you! This one was about a group of elderly people living in an assisted living sort of place, who meet every Thursday night to discuss open, unsolvable murders. A current case catches their attention, so this is the story of how they intervene and help the police get it solved. It really was hilarious at times, a little slow at times as well but overall I thought it was a decent read for this genre.
Aren’t these the happiest benches you’ve ever seen? Supposedly in Bulgaria haha! Hope you found something interesting in the list this month, if you’re interested in seeing posts from other months this year, click on my Book tab or on the links below! Happy reading friends!
I listened to The Thursday Murder Club a few months ago. Like you, I enjoyed it for the most part, but I didn’t like the ending. I don’t like it when a mystery or thriller has an ending that seems to come out of nowhere with no red herrings or clues so you can play along. That’s what I thought this one was. Maybe I missed something!?
