Lots of cute little reads this month! One of my favorites so far this year I listened to this month, check it out!
I stumbled onto Kathleen Fuller this year, and I really like her books. A little on the corny side at times, but so clean, so sweet, and they always end happy. I don’t know about you, but that’s what I need in my life right now. “Much Ado About a Latte” is her second book in her Maple Falls series, where Anita decides she wants to open a coffee shop. She has worked in the restaurant with Tanner for years, has been in love with him since high school, but feels like she needs to branch out and follow her dreams, especially since Tanner has no idea how she feels about him and seems oblivious. There is rivalry in this one, romance of course, and ups and downs, it was a cute read!
I find myself reaching for these Shopaholic books. When I read the first one, I didn’t know if I would continue through the series, but they’re just so easy to read and so hilarious at times. “Shopaholic and Sister” starts off with Becky and Luke coming back home from their almost year long honeymoon, only to find that her best friend Suzy has a new best friend, and that her Dad has a past that involves another daughter. It is hilarious how Becky wants so badly to get to know her sister and goes to such lengths to bond with her. On the side, all of their honeymoon purchases are also delivered to their home, and it is completely ridiculous how much Becky bought while they were gone. I love the witty, quick writing, and just how silly these books are at times.
I listened to “My Lady Jane” this month and it was absolutely hilarious. If you are into “Monty Python” movies or “Princess Bride,” then I think you would appreciate this. The authors took the story of Lady Jane Grey being queen for 9 days in 1553, and spun off this whole story of kings and queens, and oppressed people. The writing was quick and witty, of course it was narrated in a British accent, and overall I felt like was just done so well. It really was quite comical, I laughed out loud so many times and was so sad when it was over. I could see myself listening to this one again, it was one of my favorite books so far this year!
I grabbed “Shopaholic and Baby” to follow up the previous one, and it was pretty good. I felt like this one was a little crazier than the other ones, just as far as what would be realistic in real life haha, but it was still entertaining. Becky now has a new little person to shop for, and goes crazy getting her nursery ready. She has to have the best, most fabulous obstetrician, which turns into having a history with Luke. Lots of crazy going down in this one, but lots of laughs too.
I love a good series, so I read “Sold on Love” this month too, and really enjoyed this one. I was really surprised at the match up in this one, but as the story progressed, it made more and more sense. Harper is a realtor in Maple Falls, has built her business and has quite the reputation. Issues with her car brings her in to Rusty’s garage, and there is definitely a connection with them. The story has it’s ups and downs of course, but always ends up with everything working out. I was sad when this one ended!
I am a huge Gilmore Girls/Lauren Graham fan, so I have been trying to listen through all of her books this year. “Have I Told You This Already” was interesting, as she is sharing a lot of personal stories from her life as an actress. I enjoyed it for the most part, some of it was a little redundant I felt like if you have listened to her other books, but I also enjoy listening to her read her books, and it always has some humor associated with them as well. I don’t think I liked this one as much as “Talking as Fast as I Can,” but I enjoyed hearing her story.
I started listening to “Raising Emotionally Strong Boys” last year, but I didn’t finish it before the library loan ended, and had to wait a while to get it back again. I really enjoyed this book, I would strongly recommend for any boy mom to listen or read this one. I took notes the whole way through, and really appreciated the perspective of raising boys that this book brought me. I love learning as much as I can about having sons, connecting with them and supporting them, and this book definitely has helped me do that more!
Mixed feelings on “Violet Made of Thorns,” I like a good fantasy/royalty/magic kind of story, but this one just was a bit of a struggle to get through. I kept wanting to read the story of Violet and Prince Cyrus, but at the same time it just felt like I was dragging myself through it. I’m conflicted about reading the sequel that will come out later this year, I feel like I might, but we will see. Violet is the King’s seer, and the King is trying to find a match for his son Cyrus. He wants her to lie about the match, so he can make a political one, but awakened curses and foreign countries disrupt all of his plans. Things aren’t always what they seem in this one, it left me trying to figure it out until the very end.
I loved “Attachments,” it was so cute. Beth and Jennifer are working at a newspaper, and email back and forth all day. Lincoln has been hired as the internet security officer, so he has to go through conversations that have been flagged during the day. Of course, the girls’ emails are getting flagged daily, so he’s basically following their day to day lives through their email updates. He begins to fall for Beth, even though he hasn’t actually met her in person. It’s really cute how the story plays out, a cute read. My only complaint, was that there was one stinkin’ friend character, who had such a potty mouth. It was the only cursing in the whole book, I just couldn’t figure out why the author felt like he was necessary. Anyway, just a heads up on that one. 😉
I listened to “Someday, Someday, Maybe” by Lauren Graham this month too, and it wasn’t my favorite of her books. I don’t think I was expecting a fictional story from her, so it took me a while to switch gears. I think in the end, I found an appreciation for the book, but it took me a while to get there. Frannie has moved to New York, trying to make it as an actress, giving herself 6 months to make it. She’s in an acting class, meets a guy, has interviews for jobs, trying to work as a waitress on the side…kind of a typical actress sounding story, but with a Lauren Graham twist. You’re pulling for Frannie to make it by the end of her saga, so you’ll have to read it to find out what happens. 😉
