Ah, summer is here! Summer reading is some of my favorite kind of reading, I love to read lots of rom coms, beach reads and just things that make me happy! I will however admit, that there are a couple of reads this month that do not fit that description haha…read on to see!
I love Kristin Hannah. In fact, Kristin Hannah is the author I attribute my “getting back into reading” to after having kiddos and working a ton teaching. I haven’t read all of her books, but the ones I have read I almost always love. She has an intensity about her writing that I appreciate. I have never read a historical fiction book about Vietnam, but I knew going into “The Women,” that she would do it justice. This book was intense the whole way through, full of ups and downs, loss, grief, betrayal, horrors of war, political injustice….by the end of it, I was exhausted, but in a good way. Women played such a huge part of the Vietnam war, in an era where women were not even acknowledged for doing so. Just appreciated what she had to say on this time period and events in our country’s history.
I needed something light following “The Women” haha…Sarah Adams always does the trick. I picked up “The Rule Book” and finished it on our vacation to California this month! Nora is a professional sports agent, and when her ex-boyfriend (who she broke up with) from college becomes her newest client, she doesn’t quite know how to handle the situation. Derek isn’t happy either, and sets out to sabotage her chance at success. Of course, you know how these things go, it eventually comes back around to them doing something other than fighting and trying to destroy each other’s careers. 🙂 Very cute and happy. Yes please.
Just moved right on to “The Match” and continued to bask in my happy reading on vacation! This book was so cute. Like seriously, just so cute. Evie works for a small company that helps place service dogs to people who have different needs or disabilities. This company placed Evie’s own service dog for her epilepsy. Evie has a meeting with a Dad, Jacob, who has no idea that his daughter actually set up the meeting, so that she can get a service dog for herself. Jacob isn’t happy and doesn’t buy into her actually needing one, but of course, over time, his opinions of that and Evie change. 😉
And then right in to “The Enemy.” This is the sequel to “The Match,” following Jacob’s sister, June this time. June’s “enemy” from high school is back in town for June’s best friend’s wedding, and it’s time to make him pay. Of course, Ryan hits the scene super good looking and successful, which foils a lot of her plans. I’m sure you know where this will go. 😉
I haven’t read “And Then There Were None” since I was a teenager, so I thought it would be fun to listen to this one again. It’s probably my favorite of Agatha Christie’s novels that I have read, one of her more interesting plots with quicker pacing. A group of ten people are invited to a spooky island, where the host fails to appear. Each person has something in their past that they are hiding, and one by one begin to be picked off. Of course, this creates paranoia and hysteria within the remaining guests, and no one can get off the island in time to escape their end. Interesting ending to this one.
I’m usually on the fence with these kinds of rom coms that involve time travel…I gave “The Seven Year Slip” a read because a lot of my friends were reading it for a book club, but it probably wasn’t my favorite from this month. I read “The Dead Romantics” last year, and probably liked it a little more, although it was kind of weird too haha… Clementine’s aunt own’s a magical apartment…like some days you walk in, and it sucks you into the past. Her aunt passes away, leaving her the apartment, and one day she steps in, and meets a strange man that she doesn’t know. Except that she does know him, from in the past. Or something like that, see? It’s confusing haha…anyway, their relationship is interesting, piecing the past and the present, and finally getting the stars to align. I think I would have honestly liked this book a little more if she hadn’t had two married as her best friends and the more prominent characters of the story. Just my two cents though.
I listened to “The Emotion Code” this month and found it fascinating. It was a lot of information I hadn’t heard before about how emotionally charged events can be stored or trapped in your body, and also abut the method of releasing with magnets. He talked about how those trapped emotions can cause so many issues in life, and even how it effects animals too. Definitely some new things to think about and consider.
Well isn’t that the truth haha! I feel this deep in my bones some days…
