Tell me it’s summer without telling me it’s summer haha…eight books to review in this post for you, so obviously I’ve had a little more time this month to read!!!
Sally Hepworth is one of my favorite authors, I have enjoyed so many of her books! “The Soulmate” was good, eh okay, but I don’t know that it is one of my favorites of hers. Gabe and Pippa have moved to a beautiful house, the only catch is that is near a cliff with a bad reputation, one where people go to end their lives. Gabe has taken to rescuing as many souls as he can by talking them down, but one day, he isn’t successful. Pippa wonders if the person really jumped, or if there was more to it than that…I think the story line in general just wasn’t my favorite, and I also had a hard time relating to the characters themselves. So an enjoyable read, but not my favorite of hers.
I listened to “The Galveston Diet” this month, I feel like since I have turned 35, my hormones have been an issue. There was a ton of good info in this book and lots to take away from diet wise. It’s highly motivating for me to listen to books like this because I feel encouraged to make positive changes in what I eat or how active I am. A lot of times it helps me get back on track with better habits. A big part of her recommendations involved fasting, which I’m just not quite ready to try yet, but I really enjoyed listening to how our meals should be balanced and what foods were more helpful than others to eat. It was interesting.
“Practice Makes Perfect” was a cute read. This was the sequel to “When in Rome,” and I liked how the author ventured down a story line with one of Noah’s sisters for her to find love. Annie runs a flower shop in Rome, a sweet, quiet gal that the town loves and protects. So of course, no one is thrilled when one of Rae Rose’s body guards takes an interest in her. This one like the first had some language in it and a few border line trashy scenes, so just fyi on that note!
Ugh. I think it is official that Emily Henry is not the author for me. I keep trying to read her books because it seems like people love them, but there’s just too much bad language for my preference.“Happy Place” was about a group of friends that come together for two of them that are getting married in a place that they used to meet at all the time, their happy place. Two of the other friends in the group have been dating and are engaged, but broke it off before they came down for the wedding, and haven’t told the rest of the group yet. A lot of this book was about different people in the group working through personal baggage, finding themselves kind of thing, trying to figure out what they really want in life and also realizing what their friends really mean to them. Over all I just struggled connecting with the characters, and just their life style choices. This one was a no for me.
I liked reading “Meet Me at the Lake.” It was sad starting off because Fern is returning to the lake resort that her family has owned for generations, to take over running the place after her mother’s sudden death. She can’t get past how Will, long lost friend who she hoped would be more than a friend, was supposed to meet her at the lake years ago and still agonizes over what might have been with him. To her surprise, he turns up at the lake all these years later to help save the resort from going under. Fern realizes what she really wants from life, and reconnects with Will, while also helping him out with some struggles in his own life. Language wasn’t great and there were some “scenes” that weren’t the greatest either! I liked how the book ended though, and it was a quick read, easy to skim over some of that stuff.
“The Inheritance Games” has been on my radar for a while, I kept seeing so many people reading this young adult series, so I thought I would check it out! Avery Grambs is barely making ends meet after the death of her mother, and her older half sister taking her in. She is trying to get through high school, trying to get into college, trying to protect her sister from an awful boyfriend that keeps coming around, when one day her luck drastically changes. She is called into the office at school, to be informed that her presence is required at the reading of a will for billionaire Tobias Hawthorne. Avery is hoping to be left a few thousand dollars, when in fact she is left much more than that. She is left to live in a mansion for a year in order to acquire the inheritance, and after meeting the rest of the family, is more confused than ever as to why she was picked for this. Tobias has left a puzzle for them to all solve, leading them to family secrets and so much more than Avery bargained for.
Blah. “The Boy with the Bookstore.” You know, sometimes it cute book covers and titles that get me, and then I regret spending time reading said cute book when I get done. This was one of those books for me. It had potential, but it there was just too much language and trashy scenes for me to enjoy it. I liked the way the book ended, but man it was painful at times, especially since these two could not communicate to save their lives hah. Anyway, kind of a disappointment for me and one I should have just quit on!
I listened to “The Scaffold Effect: Raising Resilient, Self-Reliant and Secure Kids in an Age of Anxiety” and highly recommend it to anyone who is a parent! This was especially helpful for me, a parent with a child that deals with anxiety, but there were so many good suggestions and recommendations even if that isn’t something on your radar. I think our kiddos have a lot coming at them, and with technology constantly in their hands on top of it, it can be a lot to handle. Expectations can be high, it can be hard to take chances…I loved the advice he had to share in guiding your kids through those areas and would even listen to this one again at some point.
