I really enjoyed the books I read this month, there is nothing more pleasing than some good summer reading! Hope you find something you like!
I had read “Eliza Starts a Rumor” last month, and really liked Jane L. Rosen’s writing, so I looked up to see what else she had written. “Nine Women, One Dress” was a really cute read. It started off with an elderly man who worked in the fashion industry cultivating iconic dresses, and the dress for this year was a cute little black dress. Of course everyone wanted it, so it was in high demand and hard to come by, but one little dress at Bloomingdale’s made its way around. It was a light hearted, silly, fun read, that had me laughing out loud at times. The story chronicle’s the many women who wore the dress and why they returned it for different reasons. Of course there is a love interest involved, all because of the little black dress, so just overall it was a fun read.
I love Marie Benedict’s novels, she finds the most obscure women to write about, incorporating facts from their real life and filling in the blanks with her well informed fiction. “The Mystery of Mrs. Christie” was one I have liked more than her others, and maybe part of that was from reading Agatha Christie novels growing up. Mrs. Christie disappears, and leaves specific instructions to her husband regarding what he should do during her disappearance. The story follows the police investigation, leaving you wondering what happened to her and whether or not she will be found. It also gives you some background history of Agatha’s life growing up and how she became such a renown author during a time where women just didn’t do that. I really liked this one, thumbs up for sure!
I’ve always enjoyed reading about the Bush family, and enjoyed reading “Sisters First” not long ago, so I thought I would give “Everything Beautiful in Its Time” a try. It was a really sweet read, a little sad at times, because it basically covers the girls losing their grandparents, but there were just so many good take aways. My favorite part was how she still had letters from her grandparents, that were written to her growing up. My grandparents did the same thing for me, they would always write notes in cards they gave me for different occasions, and I have a letter or two from them in a box that I will treasure always. Because once people are gone, words remain and you can carry those in your heart forever.
I loved watching Gilmore Girls, and rewatching Gilmore Girls. It’s one of my favorite shows ever I would say haha…so of course I needed to read “Talking As Fast As I Can.” I actually listened to this one, and I’m so glad I did, because Lauren Graham read it. I loved listening to the history of her life, how she got to where she is today, how she became a Gilmore Girl, and so much more behind the scenes info about the show that I didn’t know. I may also read this one at some point, because she did reference a lot of photos that the book had that I couldn’t see hehe, but overall I really enjoyed this one a lot too!
This was my last read for the month, I saw that a friend of mine read “His and Hers” so I thought I would give it a try. I love psychological thrillers so much, or murder mysteries, I just like the way they have me thinking and guessing the whole way through. The downfall of that genre though is that the language can be bad, and this book isn’t an exception to that. The second half of the book was worse than the first, so that’s why I finished it, but the part that was the hardest for me was that there was a whole story line involving sexual abuse (again started half way through), which I find really difficult to read about when it’s not based on a true story. The book is set up going back and forth between and woman and a man, with a personal connection, so you wonder the whole time which one did it and who set who up. The story kept me guessing, and I’m proud to say that I figured it out before the end hehe, but I don’t know that I would recommend this one based on content.
That is it for June! If you want to see what I have read earlier this year, click on the links below or on my Book tab for all of the book reviews I have done over the years!
Sounds like “Everything Beautiful in Its Time” was a touching story. So sweet what you wrote about treasuring notes from your grandparents.
