It’s my birthday month! And happy birthday to me, I liked everything I read this month haha!!! Hope you find something you like too! 🙂
Continuing the Inheritance Games series this month! “The Hawthorne Legacy” was a good read, the story of Avery’s mysterious inheritance continues. She’s pulled in different directions by Grayson and Jameson, following more clues to the puzzle of her family connections and why she is there. Enjoyed reading this segment of the story!
I listened to “Spare” this month, mainly because I really enjoy listening to someone with a British accent reading to me haha…but also because this book was LONG. Whew! I think it clocked 13 hours on my audio book player! I had so many mixed thoughts and feelings on this book…so much of it was heartbreaking, a boy being deprived of his mother at such a young age and growing up without much emotional support, being sent away for school, so much unexplained…but at the same time, he was born into a life of such privilege, and it is hard to wonder if he really took advantage of all the opportunity that provided… but then, I know there was a lot of restriction with what he was able to do, and then dealing with the media animal was insane to me. I really did pity him having to grow up with the media constantly stalking him, looking for anything they could turn into a scandalous story. It was neat listening to everything he did in his life, I think he did what he could, but I also wonder if communication was just lacking in general with their whole family situation over there. Like I said, a LOT of mixed thoughts on this book.
Ok, I loved “Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers.” It was so cute and funny. Vera is an older woman who lives alone above her tea shop, when one day she comes down stairs to find a man dead in her shop. She calls the authorities, but assumes she can solve the case better herself. She steals some evidence off the body, and just knows that the murderer will be back to look for it. She watches the new customers that show up at her shop and follow the clues where they lead her, forming new relationships in the process. Everyone has something to hide in this story, and doesn’t everyone need a strong Chinese grandmother to put them in their place haha?! Very cute, only one character had a potty mouth, other than that it was a good read!
Melissa Ferguson is one of my favorite authors. I specifically saved her newest book “Famous for a Living” for this month to read because I knew it would be a good one! Cat is a well known Instagram influencer, that gets caught up in some bad business deals because of her partner. Everything she has built suddenly comes crashing down on her, and suddenly the option of escaping to Montana to work with her uncle who is a park ranger sounds really great. She ends up working to help save the park ranger station there, while also having an unexpected love interest as well. Everything ends up happy and working out, which is why I love Melissa’s books so much, it’s like reading a Hallmark movie every single time haha.
“A Spinster’s Guide to Danger and Dukes” was also a cute read! Poppy moved away from her hometown to London to escape a horrible marriage match and overbearing step father, and is living under a false name, trying to create a new life for herself. She is called home when her sister is accused of murder, and runs into the Duke of Langham on the way back home. They decide to help each other out, a pretend engagement for him to fend off his mother’s well intentions of matching him with a wife, and for the Duke to help Poppy out with some legal help for her sister. You can imagine what pretending to be engaged leads to, and of course they have lots of adventures together trying to solve her sisters’ murder charges. I enjoyed this one!
I listened to “The Power of Fun” this month by Catherine Price. Most of us have forgotten how to just have fun in life, overwhelmed by obligation and responsibility… it was a good reminder to contemplate how I spend my time, try to devote less to mindless technology and scrolling, and instead use that time to learn something or devote to a hobby. Even just the simplicity of child like fun is important for us to have, running, jumping, playing, enjoying nature…looking for ways to let go and breathe… There is a lot of scientific evidence that supports being playful as an adult, that it will produce a happier and healthier life, less stress and a better overall sense of well being. So overall I felt like it was a good read, while a little redundant and could probably have been said more concisely, but that seems to be the case with a lot of these books that are really trying to drive their point across.
Finally wrapped up the Inheritance Games Series this month with “The Final Gambit.” Avery’s year of living at the Hawthorne house is coming to a close, when an unexpected visitor shows up needing help. Whether or not she is trustworthy is on everyone’s mind, and Avery continues to follow the clues to discovering why she has been chose to be a part of this whole game. There is one final portion of the game to play, with the highest stakes yet. It was a good conclusion to the story, but being a young adult book, it was a little hard to believe that an 18 year old could be so smart and just know what to do in every mysterious situation hehe. It was a good read though, I enjoyed this little series but maybe my expectations were a tad high for it based on what I had heard from other readers.
