Started off the month of February with an easy read by Pamela Kelley, “A Nantucket Affair.” I kind of crack up at myself that I’m still reading this series, but there is something about grabbing an easy predictable read at times that is just really relaxing and comforting. I was wondering if this one would end up being about someone cheating on someone else, but I think the affair portion pertained to a charity gathering at the beginning of the book. The relationships of the main characters continue, one of Lisa’s friends, Sue, being one of the main characters of this book. Sue was worried about her husband potentially cheating on her, and then there was also some difficulty with Chase and Beth flipping a house. This is the fourth book of her series, and I do feel like they are progressively getting better as she goes along.
I listened to “The Road Back to You” this month and basically EVERYONE needs to stop what they are doing and go find this book to read or listen to. I am somewhat obsessed about the enneagram, and really enjoyed learning more about each of the personality numbers and their traits. The whole time I was listening, I kept thinking about people in my life and what number they might be. If I knew their personality type, I feel like it helped me understand them more, how they operate and deal with stress. I think probably what was most helpful was listening to the sections about my own personality type, I learned SO much and put together so many pieces about why I am the way I am. It is such a good read, just so enlightening regarding relationships with others and how we interact.
I really enjoyed “Our Woman in Moscow.” Beatriz Williams is hit or miss for me, some of her books just have way too much language. While this one did have some, I don’t remember it being overwhelming like some of her other books. This was a very interesting read, I learned a lot about what it was like living in Europe during the Cold War, and what Russia was like during that time. A lot of spy things happening, one of those books where everything isn’t quite what it seems. Twin sisters are separated, and one is called to rescue the other after she had mysteriously vanished with her family. It was hard to put this one down at times!
“The Winter Guest” wasn’t my most favorite read this month. I chose it because the story took place in Poland, which I have a soft spot for since my Great Grandfather emigrated from there years and years ago. This story was about a young family who had lost their father, and their mother was sick and dying in a major city. The oldest daughters were twins, and one made regular trips from their country home into the city to check on their mother. She stumbles upon and American pilot, rescues him, and then begins to bring him food as he heals from his crash. There is some jealousy between the twins, but as the Nazi occupation gets worse and worse, they finally decide to flee their home with their younger siblings. I liked reading most parts of this book, but there were just some things that were hard to believe at times. Just the amount of terrain they covered, and some other things just seemed a little farfetched. So not an awful read, but just not one of my favorites.
After reading two novels revolving around war time, I needed something light and easy. Pamela Kelley to the rescue again haha! Everyone is ready to get married in “Nantucket Weddings,” and a new wedding planner has come to town. I really enjoyed reading this one, it was fun and happy and quick.
OK, “The Overnight Guest” was a great book. The book starts out with a horrific crime occurirng in a quiet country city. The book bounces back and forth between a girl who was abducted during the crime and where she is now, an author who has come to the city to finish writing a novel and gets snowed in, and then flashbacks to the murders and abduction. The book ties everything up in the end and you can see how each of the voices were connected. This one had me stressed out at times haha but I couldn’t put it down! I read this one so fast!
“The Unhoneymooners” was a cute read, very silly at times. Olive’s twin gets food poisoning at her wedding, where everyone get violently ill except for Olive and the groom’s brother. Olive’s sister and new husband are so sick there is no way they can go on their honeymoon, and absolutely insist that Olive and Ethan take the vacation. Of course, they don’t get along and really don’t want to go, but finally give in and take the free trip to Hawaii. The more time the spend together and get to know each other, they more they start to change their opinions about each other. This one is hard core chick lit, and little more chick lit than my normal preferences, not sure that I would recommend it for language and some scenes, but the story idea was cute.
I have started following a guy on Instagram who talks about ancient philosophers and their sayings, and I love it. So much good stuff at the Daily Stoic. This one I took a screen shot of, because it is absolutely one of the reasons I read so much. There is SO much learning through reading, so much mental stimulation and opportunity for personal growth. I just cannot imagine a life without books! Hope you found something interesting to you this month!
