I am a little behind on my book posts but I know anyone who stops by here is not surprised haha!
I listened to “The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm” and overall I liked the book. It was interesting to hear about Hillary Burton’s life story, there was a lot I did not know about her that was really unexpected! It was neat to hear about how she got together with Jefferey Dean Morgan, how they bought their farm together and learned how to take care of their animals…my favorite part was learning about alpacas hah! My only complaint is that there is some language in this one and I just don’t enjoy hearing naughty words hehe, but besides that it was a different read that broke up my normal reads!
“Best Murder in Show” wasn’t my most favorite read this month but it wasn’t awful…it took me a little bit to get into it but once it got moving I enjoyed it. I will say that the introduction where the murder happens is just really odd, I think that’s why it took me a bit to get into it and I almost just said forget it hehe. The main character was a little paranoid at times too, almost like forcing the fact that this was a murder mystery if that makes sense. I did like that it was a British murder mystery, one of my favorite genres, and it was an easy little summer read but don’t have super high expectations!
I also listened to “American Royals: Inheritance” this month, it is a prequel to the American Royal series, which I love. Imagine what America would have been like had George Washington been our first King rather than President, and add some teenage drama into it hehe. I always enjoy getting back stories on series, and this one was really quick and easy.
“A House of Ghosts” was one of my favorite reads for this month! Set during the first World War, a group of people meet on a remote island at Blackwater Abbey to make contact with their dearly departed loved ones. A terrible storm comes through, trapping everyone on the island, and in the middle of the chaos a murder occurs. It’s a great read, one I really enjoyed!
I loved “A Man Called Ove.” This is the second book I’ve read by Fredrik Backman, and I’ve come to realize that he tackles those kind of life issues that are really difficult to navigate and full of so many emotions, as this story opens with a man contemplating suicide. I almost quit reading it, it’s one of those books where if you have difficult things going on in life, it might be hard to read a story like this where a husband has lost his wife and his will to live. It was heartbreaking, but over and over the neighbors of Ove foil his attempts to commit suicide, to where it becomes almost comical. It was so heartwarming to see the people in Ove’s life make it clear to him that he was needed and loved, and I really enjoyed just seeing how much people can influence one person’s life. This was an up and down kind of read, but the relationships formed and the love that Ove was shown just was such a good reminder to keep your eyes open and see who needs to be seen in life.
I listened to Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing the SS” this month as well, and honestly this was an intense book to listen to. It’s obvious that I enjoy reading WW2 fictional novels at this point I’m sure, so to learn about how some of the worst war criminals in history were apprehended was crazy. Some of the Nazis were caught quickly but others evaded arrest for years and years once the stories of the atrocities of WW2 came out. This book follows those “Nazi hunters” and what they had to do to find some of these people. I know this might not be everyone’s “cup of tea,” but I just find historical stories like this fascinating.
It will be no surprise to any of you I’m sure that once I finished reading a man’s story about suicide while also listening to Nazi Hunter stories, (I know, not good timing at all!!!), that an easy Nantucket read was in order. “Nantucket News” was really cute, and each time I read one of Pamela Kelley’s novels, I like her more and more. This was the last book in her series so far, and I do think they have gotten better as they go along. One of Abby’s college roommates, Taylor, moves to the island for a new job at the newspaper, so most of this book is about her. There are some side stories about the other characters of this series, Rhett has someone stealing from him and Lisa’s other kids have different things going on as well. Cute, easy beach read!
That’s a wrap for April! Hope you found something interesting to you, I feel like that spectrum was wiiiidddee this month for genres haha, I always love a variety! Happy reading friends!
