There is really so much to do in Atlanta, it was hard to pick and choose where we wanted to go each day. On our last full day, we decided to visit Stone Mountain. We had had a number of people recommend this to us, and I’m so glad we decided to spend our time here.
It was a little outside of the city, but not too far of a drive. We bought our tickets online, and upon entry to the park they give you a map. We drove around a few minutes trying to figure out which way to go, this place is huge! We finally found the main area where you can ride the gondola to the top of the granite outcrop.
Jude was ready to go! I love how he always wants to bring a little stuffie with him still. ๐
The operator of the gondola told us that he was friends with one of the remaining men who worked on this enormous sculpture. I can’t imagine hanging on the side of that mountain and working on this haha!
I know so many people felt like this should be “canceled,” but we had so many great conversations with the boys about who these men were and what the Civil war was about. I just keep thinking that if we cancel everything in history with any kind of negative connotation, how are we ever going to learn from our mistakes? Or learn about what people sacrificed their lives for… It was a beautiful sculpture and provided a great learning experience for our family.
This was a pretty quick ride to the top, Jenson was a little scared, especially at the end going over the rolling wheels to get inside.
We made it!
Some views from the top! This is the largest granite outcrop in the nation.
It was SO windy up here!
I love this picture so much hehe ๐
This ninety foot carving depicts General Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and President of the Confederacy – Jefferson Davis.
He was a little unsure about making the ride back down.
Icees for all hehe! We grabbed some lunch and then walked over to another area of the park.
They had this huge dinosaur exploration area, the boys loved it!
We were able to walk the paths around to look at the different dinosaur sculptures they had.
Some of them roared and moved around!
We then walked over to the dinotoruim, which was a huge multi leveled play place for the boys to run around in.
You could shoot balls from various parts of the play ground, it was pretty cool!
Time for a snack!
And then we rode the train around the mountain.
They stopped the train for a few minutes to watch a show about a dinosaur escape hehe.
We walked around the little “town” and went into a couple of shops and also walked a little closer to the sculpture.
Time for mini golf!
This was a cute course, bumped right up to the train tracks!
Jenson found this in a gift shop and wanted it, and I could not stop laughing haha…
They also had an adventures ropes course here that Jackson was begging us to do, so Jacob took the little boys back to another gift shop (Jude was having trouble deciding hehe) and Jackson and I did the ropes course together.
I couldn’t take any pictures while we were doing it but we got one when we finished! Super sweaty but super proud!
Jude discovered a love for nutella on this trip haha…
This baby boy was out like a light after this huge day of fun. Time to pack up and head home now!
