What I’m Reading – October 2021

Short book review post this month! We were traveling, then moving, then moving again HAH! Finally got into our new home and I was a crazy person unpacking…then Halloween week was upon us, and if anyone has children in public school, you know there’s something different you have to do every day it seems! All good, just busy! I loved two of the books I read this month, and wasn’t crazy about the other, let me know what you think!

“The Girls in the Stilt House” was part of a book club podcast I was following this month, and I really enjoyed the read! It reminded me a lot of “Where the Crawdad’s Sing,” which I loved, so it didn’t surprise me that this one went over well too! Matilda had left home with her boyfriend, only for the relationship to fizzle out and her return home pregnant. Her father was abusive, and Ada comes to her rescue. The story of the two girls and their life in the swamp was one to remember.

“Not a Happy Family” was also part of the book club podcast I was following, but this one I didn’t enjoy quite as much. The story of a very wealthy family starts off with them all sharing a meal together, all appearance seeming that they get along and everything is wonderful. That night though, the parents are brutally murdered, leaving the three children as prime suspects. I usually am a big Shari Lapena fan, but this one just didn’t do it for me. The last 2-3 books I have read from her I just didn’t enjoy as much as the others she has written. This book had a lot of back and forth, following people around, arguing, and the ending left me feeling like things weren’t resolved. I also just felt like the culprit was expected as well, it wasn’t surprising. Not my pick for this month!

I love Kristy Woodson Harvey, I have really enjoyed all of the books I have read from her. I don’t even know where to begin with “Under the Southern Sky”, it was an interesting love story, but beautiful as well. Parker and Amelia were childhood best friends. Parker’s wife passed away, and Amelia discovers that there are a group of embryos that have been “abandoned” as she writes a story on the topic for her job. It was so neat to read about how their lives intertwine and how life brings them back together, all in the setting of beautiful Cape Carolina.

Haven’t we all had this feeling before hehe? I know I have! I love talking to people about books, and it’s so fun waiting for someone to get to the spot you are at or vice versa!

Hope you enjoyed the reads this month, check out the links below if you are interested in previous months this year! You can also check out my Books tab for reviews from past years, and follow me on Goodreads here!
