Hello spooky season! I love to read anything spooky, creepy, mystery, fantasy related genre around this time of the year, so that’s what you’re getting this month, along with a couple of other random reads! Hope you find something you like!
So, you know there are always those books that “everyone” just raves about, and you think eh, “I may not read it,” but you keep hearing people talk about it over and over so you finally read it. This was “Fourth Wing” for me. I have such conflicting thoughts on this book, because overall the story was great. I love this genre, and this book very much had a Divergent meets dragons kind of feeling, with a Hunger Games spin on top, which I really enjoyed. Students entered basically a war college where they were trained to ride dragons. It was ruthless, a life or death kind of situation at every turn. Violet had planned on entering the Scribe sector, but her mother, a general, had other plans for her. No one expects her to survive, much less bond with a dragon. War is rising outside the kingdom walls, secrets abound. My main issue with this book is the language and some of the more spicier scenes. It’s been a while since I read a book with this much language in it, to the point where it was taking away from the story and hard to ignore or skim over. I am on the fence about reading the sequel, and really felt strongly about emailing the author and telling her to grow a brain and access some better vocabulary haha!
This book broke my heart. The things that people went through during World War 2….how did people survive it is beyond my understanding at time. “For Those Who Were Lost” was based on true events, where the parents of Guernsey Island had to make the devastating decision of sending their children across to England, or for them to all remain together at home and endure the imminent Nazi invasion. It was a chaotic situation, and many parents lost touch with their children when they were sent over. So many consequences to these decisions, and while some children did fine with the situation, others did not. Just was a tough one to read through at times.
I have enjoyed the American Royals series, it’s a cute series of books about what America might have been like had George Washington agreed to be the first King, rather than the first President. “Reign” is the fourth book in the series, which opens with Queen Beatrice in a coma from the car accident in the preceding book, and Princess Samantha has run away with her boyfriend. When Beatrice wakes up, she can’t remember anything from the previous year, yet has to convince the nation that she is fit to serve. Everything is somewhat of a mess, and there is no loss of drama with this one. I think the first book is still my favorite of the series, but it’s been cute to read where the author goes with this story line.
“Arsenic and Adobo” wasn’t my favorite read this month just from a writing standpoint, it took me a while to get through this one, but it had a decent story plot to it. Lila moves back home after a breakup, and jumps right in to help her family with their failing restaurant. A snarky food critic, who is also an ex-boyfriend, drops dead in their restaurant one day, with the cops blaming them. Lila does her own investigating to uncover what was really going on with the food critic, since she is getting no help from the detectives, and ends up biting off a lot more than she can chew. Pun intended hehe. 😉
“One of Us Is Lying” had a “Breakfast Club” feel to it. Five high schoolers land themselves in after school detention, where mysteriously, one of them drops dead while the teacher has conveniently stepped out of the room. All fingers point to them, because Simon, the kid who died, released secrets about each one of them that they didn’t want to be revealed, making each of them a suspect. A good “who dunnit” book for this Fall.
I read “Enchanted to Meet You” solely based on the cover, and that is was a rom com about a witch haha…it was ok, the story had some weird plot points to it that just felt really stretched. Jessica had cast a spell when she was in high school, that landed her on the wrong side of the world council of witches, so she was shocked when Derrick, a member of the council, shows up to tell her that she is the chosen one to save the world. There are some wacky things going on in town, that all come to a head, when Jess must decide if she will save their city or not. I finished this one literally on Halloween day, so it felt right, even though it wasn’t my most impressive read from this year hehe!
Books, coffee and rainy days, yes please. I think that’s why I get so excited for Fall to arrive, because it usually means some rainy days in store for us! Hope you found something interesting to read here!
