Another super short book review for this month! Unpacking has been constant these last few weeks, every spare minute has gone to that haha!
Since I really enjoyed Brigid Kemmerer’s series last month, I decided to read one of her newer novels, “Defy the Night.” I’ll be honest, the beginning of this book threw me. It really didn’t grab my interest, there was a pretty graphic scene, I was just like what is this…it felt a little extreme to me. But then there was a pretty big twist that I wasn’t expecting, and I loved the rest of the book. Tessa and her best friend, Wes, work at night to steal a flower needed to make a drink that will heal people from a sickness that is spreading through the kingdom at break neck speeds. Of course the wealthier people of the land have much access to the moonflower, but the poorer people do not, and Tessa and Wes are basically acting as a Robin Hood duo to distribute it to the poor without getting caught. The King and Prince of the land are very cruel when people get caught stealing the Moonflower, so when Wes doesn’t come back one night she thinks the worst. The story continues on with how Tessa manages with Wes’ disappearance and the revolution that arises when people are continually sick and scared of dying. It hit a little close to home with everything we have been going through with COVID, but I really enjoyed this read and am looking forward to a sequel coming out at some point!
I have read Evie Dunmore’s other books, so when “Portrait of a Scotsman” came out, I was interested to see what that one was about. Each of her books center around one lady in a group of friends, better known as the “league of extraordinary women,” and this one focused on Hattie Dunmore. Hattie is inexplicably drawn to Lucian Blackstone, who has a reputation for being ruthless calling in people’s debts and does not have the heritage that a lady like Hattie should be looking for in marriage. It was funny reading about how they got together, and how their relationship progressed. Hattie learns more about Lucian and his background, what he has been through in life that has made him the man he is, how those hard things shaped him. I will say that if I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who wasn’t married haha, some of the scenes were a little scandalous! I loved reading about how they worked through their issues with each other though and didn’t give up.
I listened to “The Rested Child” this month, I always prefer listening to self help books over reading them, and overall I thought this was a decent read. I heard about this book when I watched an interview on Smarter News on Instagram, which is a great account if you are looking for simple news updates and background that normal media won’t give you. This book was HEAVY on sleep disorders and information at times, but if you are experiencing a sleep disorder, I would bet this book would be helpful for you. We still struggle with our kids and rest, and this helped me approach it with a more positive outlook. Some things he mentioned I didn’t agree with at times, but he also had a lot of good points to take away too.
I loved this saying so much, it’s so true! I just can’t imagine a life without reading!
