This month had quite a variety of books, from thrilling murder mysteries to a Christmas novel to a superstitious Chinese novel. I enjoyed every book I read again this month, so hopefully you can find something you liked too!
I read a few Agatha Christy novels growing up, and “An Unwanted Guest” reminded me of her novel “And Then There Was None.” Your classic murder mystery where one guest after another suspiciously turns up dead with only a handful of options as the murderer. A group of guests gets snowed in, and one by one mysteriously falls prey to a unwanted guest. I enjoyed this read a lot, the connections and twists that turned up throughout the novel. It wasn’t too much that I had nightmares at night, but just enough to have me nervous and wondering what was going to happen next!
My neighbor is quite the avid reader, and we are always chatting about what we’re currently reading. I had chatted with her about another suspense/mystery kind of book and she said that I needed to read “The Mother-In-Law,” so because she hasn’t steered me wrong yet I checked it out from my library! I loved this book for so many reasons, not only because of the plot twists but because of the way it described the different relationships between in-laws and family members from different perspectives so intricately, things that I had never considered before and how statements could be meant for one thing and come across so differently to other parties. I think my favorite line from the whole book was in the end, where it summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters, and mother-in-laws and daughter-in-laws…it’s not a direct quote, but it stated something to the extent of “all any of us are looking for is acceptance from each other in our roles, and respect.” I couldn’t agree more. A very interesting read to say the least!
I always like reading something with a winter or holiday feel around this time of the year, so I picked up the first book of the “Winter Street” series to fill that yearly requirement hehe! This was a short, easy read, but I will tell you, it felt like I stepped into a soap opera right from the start. There is a lot of drama, every member of this family seems to have some kind of dramatic issue, but it was also comical at some points just because it was borderline ridiculous that so much could be going on within the span of just a few days. Anyway, quick, easy holiday read for you, probably not my one of my favorites but an easy read to distract yourself from your own holiday stress!
I saw “The Night Tiger” on Reece Witherspoon’s book club recommendations list and thought I would check it out. Ever since I visited Singapore in 2011, I have always been interested in Asian culture and stories, and this one fit right into my fascination of that culture!A story of five people who were connected by their names’ meanings, connected here in this world and the one beyond… a story of Chinese superstitions and legends of Night Tigers, or men who’s souls stalked the night in the restless form of a tiger until their bodies were made whole again and could move on…all of this intertwined with a mysterious slew of unexplained deaths and other happenings as well. It was a little slow starting out but I really enjoyed this read, mainly because it was so very different from my normal picks. Highly recommend this one!
