One of the reasons I love reading is because it gives me a healthy dose of perspective. I think it’s very easy to stay uninformed, with blinders on per say as to what is going on in other parts of our world, easy to get caught up in our own lives…This month I started off by reading a true story of a young girl who escaped her life under Communistic reign in North Korea for a better life.
When I read people’s accounts of their lives in situations like this, I absolutely feel like I’m living in a dream here in the United States. The things we get bothered by here are so insignificant compared to what some people in this world are burdened by or have gone through. Reading the story “The Girl with Seven Names” has made me so grateful to live in a place of choice and plenty.
Wow. This one. Whew! The chief of a group of Cheyenne Indians travels to speak with President Grant about making an arrangement to help his people assimilate into “white man’s” culture, and his request is astounding. Send “One Thousand White Women” to his tribe, to become wives of his men, in order to have children that could live among the white men. This truly did happen in the late 1800s, but President Grant denied his request. This book is a personal account of what could have happened had he said yes. And I could not put this story down. This book was so realistic, I truly thought it was a true personal account until I read the information in the back hah! An interesting story for sure, very descriptive at times, sad, funny, horrific and sweetly pleasant all at the same time.
Earlier this year I read “Goodnight London” by Jennifer Robson and loved it, so I thought I would give “After the War is Over” a read! This book was slow getting into, but overall I liked the story. Set after WW1, the story of how a girl helps a long tine friend overcome his post traumatic stresses from the war. A simple yet heart warming love story.
I loved “The Accidental Beauty Queen!” I feel like May was such a busy month and I needed a quick and easy read right about now! This book was fun, comical, romantic and a tad suspenseful at times hah! Twin sisters end up switching places in a beauty pageant because one has an allergic reaction to something she ate, while the other ends up falling in love with someone during the pageant as her sister! It’s not complicated at all hah! Really just enjoyed this book from start to finish!
I’ve told a friend before that I have to balance my reads out as I go and she agrees. It’s hard sometimes to read heavy novels back to back, so I was really glad I had something light before diving into “Where the Crawdads Sing.” This book. Whew. Might possibly be my favorite read this year. If you look on Amazon, it has over 13,000 reviews with 4.8 out of five star rating. How many books do you see that on? Definitely not many. If that doesn’t convince you to read it then I don’t know what would! The story of a little girl abandoned by her family in the marsh backwoods of North Carolina and how she survives and actually thrives, with a murder mystery tied up in the middle of it all. You will be glad you spent the time on this one. I feel like it’s always good to read about how people’s behaviors can effect one another, even when it’s hard to imagine what people have gone through because if others. Put this one on your “to read” list!
This ☝🏻 is exactly how I felt after finishing “Where the Crawdads Sing!” I felt like I had to take a day off before beginning another book and just let this one settle. I hope you enjoyed my list from last month and found something that interested you! Check out my other reviews from this year below!

I also loved “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and it agree that it might be my #1 book of the year, for sure in the top 5. I just heard a review of “One Thousand White Women” that spoke of it as highly as you do, so I think it’s going on my TBR. “The Girl with Seven Names” sounds intriguing. I may have to consider that one, as well.
I’m impressed with your varied reading. Interesting!
